SRK on Hollywood

While most actors look forward to making it big in Hollywood, SRK is not interested in Hollywood. He has been quoted on saying, “It is better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven, even if that (Hollywood) is considered heaven. I think they also make films as we do. I think I don’t pertain to that. I would rather make a good film here than to go to Hollywood." Indian cinema is where he got his start and it is home to him. Bollywood holds more value than Hollywood, and his try is to be and remain the best at home. However he has said that if he ever did go abroad, it would be to do respected roles and not be treated like a "brown Third World urchin." SRK does not believe in doing a foreign film just for the sake of being in a foreign film. He, on the other hand, would only do a film he felt was right for him.

SRK's Baazi in BaaziGar

Out to avenge the grave injustice to his family, Shah Rukh Khan as Ajay turns in a fine performance. Ajay woos Seema played by Shilpa Shetty and Priya played by Kajol, the daughters of his enemy Madan Chopra played by Dalip Tahil, as part of his game plan to destroy Madan. This was the simple and basic story line of Baazigar, a psychological thriller. This was a movie of the Anti-Hero.

Baazigar was not typical bollywood film where the hero is always 'nice-guy.' Hindi films illustrate the hero as being the one fighting the crime, not the one being the criminal in any sense. Filled with suspense and intrigue, Baazigar casts aside the usual sweet and innocent hero for something a bit darker. In so doing, the usual Bollywood conventions are torn asunder, leaving the audience unprepared for the twists and turns before them. The audience is placed in a world where people are not what they seem, and situations are not what they appear This movie offers a unpredictable ending and offers a something different from the average bollywood flicks.

In hindi cinema heroes do not become heros, so when an actor such as Akshay Kumar was offered the role of Ajay Sharma/Vicky Malhotra in this thiller, he turned it down. ShahRukh Khan was still a newcomer when this role was offered to him after it was rejected by established actors such as Salman Khan. For him to take on such a role was a risky step. It is very rare for an actor who plays the role of a villian to become a hero. But it is this path that ShahRukh Khan took. Baazigar only proved that this newcomer has versatile talent. He, truly, can not be tight casted into any role.

This movie shot Shah Rukh Khan to super stardom.
